Forest School
Forest School at the Spires Federation.
Forest School is defined by six core principles, which were agreed by the Forest School community in 2011.
The Long-Term Principle
Forest School is a long-term process. We work with our pre-school and reception children, every week, for a period of 12 weeks. That group then returns the following year, in a different season, for another 12-weeks. This ensures that those children receive an authentic Forest School experience. Children in other year groups will have a number of ‘taster’ sessions every year throughout the rest of their time at our schools.
The Nature Principle
Forest School takes place in nature within the school grounds. All our sites have trees amongst a variety of flora and fauna. We are improving the wooded environment over time.
The Risk Principle
We offer the children the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
The Holistic Learning Principle
We promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent, and creative learners. Our sessions offer mixed opportunities for participants to develop their physical, social, cognitive, linguistic, emotional and spiritual selves. In a session, this might include climbing/balancing, circle time, reflection time, nature connection, team tasks/games, problem solving and creative projects.
The Leadership Principle
Forest School is run by our in-house level 3 Forest School Leader who works alongside other teachers, TA’s and parent volunteers to lead sessions that follow the six principles.
The Community Principle
Our sessions are always child-led, are driven by the children’s needs and motivations, and always include free choice and play.
