Mathematics at The Spires Federation

Useful Resources

We are extremely passionate about the teaching of Mathematics at the Spires Federation. We use the mastery approach in our teaching and firmly believe this method will create curious mathematicians, who are confident in their ability as they have gained a secure understanding of the key mathematical concepts.

As a Federation we follow the 'White Rose Maths' scheme. This consistent approach has supported our teaching and provided an effective long-term plan for the provision of Maths. The aim of White Rose Maths is to develop a culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths – a culture that produces strong, secure learning and real progress. White Rose Maths is inspired and informed by robust, world-class research and global maths experts.

The concept of teaching mathematics to mastery is to ensure that topics are well developed. By following the White Rose scheme, pupils spend enough time to fully explore a concept before moving on to a different topic. New knowledge is then used on subsequent lessons so that all ideas build on top or each other and pupils have the opportunity to develop relationships between the topics. Ideas and concepts are revisited as pupils progress through the years, each time at a higher level.

There are lots of links and documents below where you can find out more about maths at the Spires Federation and also information on how to support your child with their mathematics skills.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6):

The BBC website has a range of excellent resources to support all areas of mathematics. From the Numberblocks in the Early Years, through to ratio and proportion questions in Year 6, take a look at the links above to embed knowledge whilst having fun!

Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check

This activity exactly mirrors the 'Multiplication Tables Check' that will be given to children at the end of Year 4. They are tested on their multiplication tables up to 12 x 12. There are twenty-five questions and children have six seconds to answer each question and three seconds between questions.

Maths Chase is a completely free and fun game where you can quickly test your times tables, along with many other maths skills!
